Individuals with the metabolic syndrome have a 1.5-3 fold increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and a 3-5 fold increased risk of type 2 diabetes [2].

Metabolic syndrome is characterised by a clustering of multiple risk factors in one person, which can be genetically acquired and/or due to physical inactivity and a sedentary lifestyle:

  • overweight or obesity

  • hypertension

  • prediabetes/diabetes

  • dyslipidaemia (pathological lipid profile)

  • dysglycaemia (pathological glucose profile)
