Causes
In 90% of all cases the reason for hypertension remains unclear. This is than called essential hypertension. Hypertension is known to be a product of genetic predisposition with environmental and lifestyle factors [1].

Genetic predisposition - a family history of:

  • hypertension

  • heart disease

  • type 2 diabetes


Environmental factors:

  • age

  • hormone state


There is no significant difference in the development of hypertension between men and women although the prevalence of hypertension increases sharply with age, especially for women [2].

Lifestyle - influential risk factors:

  • smoking

  • heavy drinking

  • overweight

  • sodium and calorie-rich diet

  • lack of physical activity

  • stress
