Guidelines and Classification
The WHO and the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) defined criteria for metabolic syndrome in 2003. Ethnicity-based differences and the urgent need for a single universal accepted diagnostic tool further led to a new definition by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).
With minor modifications, these criteria are currently recommended and widely used.
Central adiposity is now used as the measurement criterion for the prevalence of metabolic syndrome as it is the central component in all different ethnic groups and can easily be diagnosed with a tape measure [3].
