September, 2009: Pritor®/Kinzal® at the ESC 2009 in Barcelona, Spain
(Sept 2009) This year’s European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress, Aug 29 – Sep 2, Barcelona was yet again the world’s largest meeting in cardiovascular medicine, with over 30,000 attendees.
This renowned international meeting provided an opportunity for Bayer Schering Pharma (BSP) to showcase its impressive portfolio for the management of CVD and highlight the clinical benefits of Adalat® and Pritor®/Kinzal® in the management of hypertension and CVD.
Over the course of the congress, BSP sponsored an interactive product exhibition booth, where guest speakers gave mini-presentations and encouraged debates on ongoing questions around the optimal management of hypertension, which generated significant interest.

BSP also sponsored a Satellite Symposium, “What more can we achieve beyond mono and combination therapy for hypertension management?” attended by nearly 400 delegates. Here, a distinguished panel of experts discussed optimal strategies for the effective management of hypertension and CVD in patients at increased CV risk.
Roland Asmar (France) presented new, exciting data from the
ONTARGET® programme, which showed that treatment of hypertensive patients at high CV risk with Pritor
®/Kinzal
® over 5 years:
- Significantly reduced the prevalence of LVH (left ventricular hypertrophy) by 21% compared to placebo
- Reduced the prevalence of LVH by 8% compared with ramipril, but the reduction was not statistically significant
This new data adds to the body of evidence from
ONTARGET® demonstrating that Pritor
®/Kinzal
® is as effective for CV risk reduction but better tolerated than the gold standard ACE inhibitor ramipril.
Alejandro de la Sierra (Spain) presented the renal protective effect and additional metabolic benefits of Pritor
®/Kinzal
®, demonstrating its advantages in difficult-to-treat metabolic syndrome patients, particularly for reducing the risk of developing T2D.
Henry Elliott (UK) and Peter Meredith (UK) discussed the ACTION® trial, which has already demonstrated the effectiveness of Adalat® in hypertensive patients with CAD. New analysis of the data shows Adalat® also offers CV benefits in isolated systolic hypertension (ISH) patients, and that concomitant use with RAAS inhibitors provides superior BP control and CV risk reduction. Further information about optimal treatment strategies with the combination of Adalat® and Pritor®/Kinzal® is expected from the ongoing TALENT study.
In his conclusion, Henry Elliott stressed the fact that management of hypertension remains suboptimal in patients at high CV risk and that, in order to achieve target BP, more aggressive intervention may be required, including appropriate combination therapy.
