June 2010 Pritor®/Kinzal® at the ESH 2010 in Oslo, Norway
Bayer Schering Pharma (BSP) presents initial findings from TALENT at the European Society of Hypertension (ESH) congress 2010

BSP’s successful programme of activities at ESH 2010 were focused on the rollout of the initial findings of TALENT (
A Multicentre STudy EvALuating the Efficacy of Nifedipine GITS – Telmisartan Combination in BP Control and Beyond: comparison of two strategies). Kicking off events on Saturday 19th June was an exciting ‘Hotline’ presentation on TALENT by one of the principal investigators, Professor Luis Ruilope (Spain), demonstrating that initiating antihypertensive treatment in patients at high cardiovascular (CV) risk with the combination of Adalat
® (nifedipine GastroIntestinal Therapeutic System) and Pritor
®/Kinzal
® (telmisartan) allowed optimal blood pressure (BP) control to be achieved earlier compared with starting with one drug and then adding a second.

On Sunday 20th June the BSP Educational Session, ONTARGET for a TALENTed approach to hypertension and CVD management, was attended by over 350 delegates. Co-Chaired by the TALENT principal investigators Professors Giuseppe Mancia (Italy) and Luis Ruilope, the programme examined the evidence supporting the use of nifedipine GITS and telmisartan, alone and in combination, in high-risk patients, not only for lowering BP, but also for modifying disease and protecting against CV events. Luis Ruilope provided an overview of Adalat® and Pritor®/Kinzal® , and described how the benefits of these drugs may be related to their structure and formulation. Professor Roland Asmar (France) highlighted data from the ONTARGET/TRANSCEND trials, which as well as demonstrating the additional benefits of telmisartan on cardiac, vascular and metabolic factors, have resulted in the label for Pritor®/Kinzal® being extended to include cardiovascular prevention in patients with manifest atherothrombotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) or type 2 diabetes mellitus with documented target organ damage.

Throughout the ESH, BSP ran a booth attracting considerable interest from congress attendees, providing them with the opportunity to discuss the TALENT and ONTARGET results and the new CV prevention indication with clinical experts.
