International Cardiovascular and Metabolic Academy
First Interactive Workshop, Dec 8, Brussels, Belgium
The International Cardiovascular and Metabolic Academy (ICMA) successfully conducted its first interactive workshop in Brussels, Belgium on December 8 to raise awareness and drive discussion amongst leading European experts physicians on new trends in hypertension and cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention and management, based on the latest key clinical trials.
The workshop, made possible through an unrestricted educational grant from Bayer Schering Pharma, achieved a full turnout of over 50 cardiologists from across Europe. The ICMA faculty, comprising a panel of internationally recognised experts in the field of CVD, presented and discussed the latest clinical findings and opinions on topics including: hHypertension, end-organ damage and guidelines; RAAS inhibition and the potential benefits beyond blood pressure control; PROTECTION® and ONTARGET®: Expectations and Perspectives.
Using a novel interactive format to encourage participation and debate, each presentation included a highly energetic discussion, followed by afternoon breakout sessions involving all ICMA speakers and NCMA workshop attendees. In these sessions physicians deliberated on CVD protection optimisation in daily clinical practice, end organ protection beyond blood pressure control and the potential benefits of dual RAAS blockade.
Based on the workshop outcome, the attending experts will be establishing National Cardiovascular and Metabolic Academies (NCMA) in their home countries in order to disseminate the international opinion and stimulate discussion on national hypertension and CVD prevention and management.
Following positive feedback from the First Interactive ICMA Workshop, it is planned for the workshops to become a regular fixture of the educational calendar. As new clinical data are releasedWith the rich number of publications scheduled for 2008, including the landmark ONTARGET® Trial Programme, the ICMA will have a lot to debate., the ICMA will conduct future workshops, commencing with The ONTARGET® Trial Programme hotline session at the American Congress of Cardiology, Chicago, USA.
